Since
the formation of the Grampian Squirrel Group the group has achieved the
following:
A
red squirrel conservation plan was prepared as part of the North
East Local Biodiversity Action Plan after the red squirrel was identified as a priority species
in the North East.
A
survey of red squirrel and grey squirrel activity across the whole of Grampian was completed in 2000 and has been updated every year since.
A new management plan for Hazelhead Park was devised with Aberdeen City Council to promote the long term prospects of red squirrels living in the park.
National Trust for Scotland and Forestry Commission woodland closest to Aberdeen City and alongside the Dee and the Don at Countesswells, Drum and Bennachie are now being managed to benefit red squirrels.
All forestry planting and felling schemes on Deeside and Donside are checked to make sure they take into account the needs of red squirrels.
Across Grampian red squirrel conservation is now a major part of the Forestry management planning process.
An innovative rope bridge was also put across the river at Gight. Further bridges are also in the pipeline for Ellon and Aboyne.
A map of squirrel road kills is being prepared by the Grampian Squirrel Group and the NESBReC organisation based on information supplied by members of the general public.
